This is a restaurant that specializes in pork and budae jigae aka army soup (부대찌개). It’s located in Migeum (미금) in Bundang (분당). The price was pretty good and the best part is rice and ramen are free refill!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

8,000 won per person
청춘부대찌개 which translate Youth Army Soup, which is meant to mean that it is a nostalgic taste from our youth.

You can add different sides for extra cost but rice and ramen is free refill!

Very simple side dishes since the soup already has different ingredients.

It wasn’t too salty and wasn’t too spicy. Just right.

All you can eat pork and doenjangjigae (된장찌개) for 11,000 won per person! The quality of meat is not too bad. This restaurant is part of a chain! There are multiple ones throughout Bundang and Seoul. Unfortunately, the one we went to, I think, is gone.

All you can eat 3cm thick pork cuts, bean sprout and kimchi, and soup!

Basically saying not to put the heat to the highest since the pork can burn.

Main menu is the all you can eat pork and soup for 11,000 won. You can order rice for an extra 1,000 won. If everyone in the table orders rice, then it’s free refill as well!

The side menu says theres also raw meat (육회), cold buckwheat noodles (냉면), steamed eggs (계란찜). They also have soju and beer for 4,000 won. If you want a translation of the menu, message us!

It also says that if 4 people come in as one table, they will give you free 1.25L Coke.

Translation (Summary):

How to Enjoy to the 100%

– Basically says that the first serving is given but the customers have to get the refills for themselves.

– When paying, you have to remember the table number.

– Do not raise the heat level to 3, the highest, because the pork will burn and set off the alarms.

– Only pork should be on the grill. For kimchi and bean sprouts, use container provided to cook.

– To prevent wasted food, only take little by little.

– Drinks and side menu should be ordered through the staff but water and such is prepared for self service.

The basic setup that is provided when you enter the restaurant. Refills are self service.

The different pork meats!

Beansprouts and kimchi is to be cooked in this container and not directly on the grill.

Doenjang Jigae that is to be cooked over the grill.

I didn’t get to take pictures of the self-service bar but it’s well organized so you can take what you need.

(Home Shabu Shabu)

We tend to eat Shabu Shabu at home often! Especially on a cold day. The best part about ShabuShabu at home is that you can dig into the fridge and put whatever you want. It’s a good way to get rid of vegetables thats been sitting in the fridge.

Overview of the ingredients. I personally like to eat the vegetables over the meat. We also have scallops and tofu that we’re going to add along with the meat.

We have beansprouts, zucchini, onion, mushroom, spinach, cabbage…so on!

High quality meat makes all the difference!

For the broth, we have the basic Korean broth (kelp, anchovies, radish boiled together). To this, we added some clams! These are Manila clams, I believe.

We usually can’t wait so once there is a rolling boil, we add all the vegetables!

For sauce, I usually have an Asian Chili sauce that I buy. My mom prefers this sesame seed sauce. Sometimes I like to mix soy sauce with a bit of lemon (bootleg Ponzu sauce).

Have you tried Shabu Shabu at home? What is your favorite ingredient to add?

Agalico Itaewon

It’s a nice wine bar or tapas place that I went with a friend. This one is the second store! We had vin chaud and some dishes on a cold day. The food is actually pretty good! It was quite empty when we went. Look for the short video at the bottom!

UFO Taco Garlic Octopus (8,000 won)

This was so, so good. The octopus was not dry at all! It was very juicy and there was a lot of garlic and parmesan cheese on top. Plus, the plating is so cute. I thought they were escargots in the beginning.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Assorted Tapas (14,800 won)

I honestly felt like the price was too high for what was given.

Bolognese (11,000 won)

It was very good! Highly recommend. The egg on top was just perfect and went well with the whole dish. You can see us picking at it the most in the video below.

Fish and Chips (Cod/

So I wanted to upload my take on the classic fish and chips. I apologize beforehand to the fish and chip fans. My recipe is my own spin so it might break all rules of cooking fish and chips.

📋 Ingredients 📋
Flour for Frying (or tempura flour)
Salt/Pepper or Seasoning Salt

📋 Preparation 📋
– A pan with just flour to coat the fish prior to dunking into the batter. This helps the batter stick to the fish. I actually use a ziploc bag to mix the fish around in.
– A bowl to mix the batter

IMG_1781 - Copy.jpg

This is the frying flour that I used. So I use the same flour to coat the fish and also for the batter. More explanation below in the steps.

I use any beer that I have in the fridge. It does a good job in masking any smell from the fish, especially if the fish was defrosted and not fresh.

I mix the beer and flour until the consistency is not too watery but not too thick.
That’s such a broad statement…
But think of Elmer’s white glue with a bit of water.

Step 1: Create the batter in a bowl or pan
Step 2: Take the pan or a plastic ziploc bag with just the flour and add salt and pepper or just seasoning salt. I personally add a bit of parsley flakes as well.
Step 3: I turn the stove on with a pot of oil at this stage
Step 4: Take the fish and make sure to use paper towels to pat the fish dry before coating it with the flour
Step 5: Make sure to dust the excess flour off (this is why I use the ziploc method because it shakes the excess off)
Step 6: Dunk the fish in the batter but be gentle so that the batter sticks to the fish
Step 7: Fry until golden brown (or for crispier pieces cook until just before it gets golden brown and move to Step 8).

(Step 8: Take the pieces out of the oil and let it rest on a rack or paper towels for a few minutes. Re-fry the pieces for a crunchier texture)

I let it fry until this stage, where it is still a bit white and I take it out of the heat to let it sit before frying again.

Water can come out of the fish, especially if the fish pieces were cold or not thawed properly, and can burn you when you place it back in the hot oil.

Tartar sauce is always best with it! But the Korean way to eat fried fish is with a bit of soy sauce and vinegar mixed together.

Slurp 🍜

The best time to visit Slurp is on a cold, rainy day. It is a small restaurant with a few tables. There was a line when we went. Probably because it was chilly outside and everyone wanted something warm!

After you’re done eating, you take your tray to the drop-off before leaving.

The bun was very moist and the pork was so juicy!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Pork Bun ($3.50)
Steamed bao bun stuffed with Chashu pork belly, Cucumber, Spicy Sweet Sauce and Japanese mayo

The chicken pieces were huge compared to the amount of rice. It was a bit salty for my taste

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Kara-Age Chicken Bowl ($9.98)
Japanese Fried Chicken • topped with Hawaiian BBQ sauce, Sriracha and Japanese mayo • Scallions

It was good! A tad bit salty but it did the trick in warming us up. You can add more toppings if you like!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Slurp Classic Tonkatsu ($11.45)
Full Bodied Tonkotsu Pork Soup • Ramen Noodles • Slow-Cooked Chashu Pork-Belly • Slurp Egg* • Scallions • Red Ginger

We visited Slurp a few years back. The prices above reflect the current prices listed on their website.

Fika (Coex) 🇸🇪☕

Fika is often translated as “a coffee and cake break”, which is kind of correct, but really it is much more than that.

Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat.

Origin of the name The word fika actually derives from the 19th-century slang word for coffee: kaffi. Invert the word kaffi, and you get fika.

It was pretty empty for some reason on this day
“Working” with friends over coffee

It wasn’t too sweet! Pairs nicely with coffee.

It’s very clean inside. When we went, the restaurant was empty.

There were signs all around the store describing the benefits of buckwheat (which is what the noodles are made of), as well as, the history of the restaurant.

The history of the store

This is the cold noodles!

It felt a bit plain compared to the cold noodles we were used to.

Honey Mango Bread

I thought that this was the best dish.
When they said you get bread, I thought it would be literally bread so I was surprised to see salad. This is basically mango, spinach, and parmesan cheese on top of naan.

Tandoori Chicken

Unfortunately, the chicken was too dry for us to eat.
So we skipped it

My go to curry. I love tikka masala. The one here was okay but the spices weren’t as strong as I am used to. They made it to suit the Korean taste buds.

The set comes with yellow rice but they forgot about us.

India?
I thought it was good overall
I didn’t feel too full afterwards, which could be because we missed out on the chicken and rice…
The manager was very friendly. He seemed to be from India or maybe Bangladesh? But he was fluent in Korean, which was interesting.
